There is no single best iPad note app. A student who records lectures while handwriting, a writer who lives in Markdown, and a consultant who turns meetings into visual project workspaces are solving different problems. This finder starts with that job instead of handing everybody the same winner.

The recommendations use a transparent score based on your primary workflow, the other devices you use, your budget preference, and any must-haves you select. Everything runs locally in this page. No answer is uploaded, and OmniCanvas receives no scoring bonus.

How the iPad note app finder ranks each option

Your primary workflow carries the most weight. Native Pencil inking, synchronized audio, handwriting conversion, PDF annotation, offline access, Markdown, spatial layout, and collaboration only affect the result when you select them. A missing must-have receives a real penalty, so a popular app cannot coast to the top on reputation alone.

Device fit matters too. Apple-only tools can be excellent if your life is entirely inside Apple hardware, while OneNote and browser-based tools become more useful when Windows, Android, or a Chromebook is part of the workflow. Free and one-time preferences are scored separately because a limited free demo is not the same as a complete free notebook.

The 12 apps being compared

The finder compares Goodnotes, Notability, Apple Notes, Microsoft OneNote, MyScript Notes, Noteshelf, Bear, Noteful, Apple Freeform, Apple Preview, Paper, and OmniCanvas. The mix deliberately includes paper replacements, typed writing tools, PDF utilities, sketchbooks, cross-platform notebooks, and spatial workspaces instead of pretending they all belong to one narrow category.

Nebo was renamed MyScript Notes on iOS and Android; the Windows app still uses the Nebo name. The finder uses the current iPad name while keeping the former name visible so existing users can recognize it.

Native Pencil apps and web canvases are not equivalent

A native handwriting app can tune ink latency, pressure, palm rejection, and Pencil gestures much more deeply than a browser app. Goodnotes, Notability, MyScript Notes, Noteshelf, and Noteful should rank above OmniCanvas when paper-like handwriting is the deciding requirement.

Apple's included apps cover two narrower jobs surprisingly well: Freeform is a strong collaborative infinite whiteboard, while Preview is the fastest route to focused PDF markup. Paper remains the more expressive choice when sketch feel matters more than organization.

OmniCanvas solves a different job: it keeps the recording, timestamped transcript, decisions, tasks, sketches, PDFs, and follow-up material together on an infinite canvas. On iPad it supports microphone recording and live transcription, but system or tab audio capture requires a supported desktop browser. That limitation is part of the recommendation rather than hidden after the click.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best note-taking app for iPad?

For paper-like handwriting, start with Goodnotes. For audio tied closely to handwritten lecture notes, try Notability. Apple Notes is the lowest-friction free default, Freeform is the best included whiteboard, Preview is the focused PDF choice, Paper is strongest for expressive sketching, OneNote is the broadest free cross-platform notebook, MyScript Notes specializes in handwriting conversion, Bear is strongest for typed Markdown notes, and OmniCanvas fits people who want recordings and follow-up work organized spatially.

Is Nebo still available on iPad?

The app formerly called Nebo is now MyScript Notes on iOS and Android. Nebo keeps its original name on Windows, and the note formats remain compatible.

Can OmniCanvas record system audio on an iPad?

No. On iPad, OmniCanvas can record microphone audio and transcribe it live. Capturing system or browser-tab audio requires a supported desktop browser. You can capture on a computer, then review, annotate, and organize the resulting workspace on iPad.

Does Apple Pencil support mean the same thing in every app?

No. In this finder, Apple Pencil support means native, Pencil-optimized handwriting. OmniCanvas accepts stylus drawing in its iPad web/PWA canvas, but it is not presented as equivalent to the native inking engines in handwriting-first apps.

Is this recommendation private?

Yes. The scoring runs entirely in your browser, needs no account, and sends none of your answers to a server.
